The core values of Sikhism promote equality, justice, and compassion for all human beings. As we uphold these principles, we are committed to advancing anti-racism, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion within our community and beyond. Inspired by the teachings of the Gurus, we actively work to identify, understand, and challenge systemic oppression and exclusion based on race, ethnicity, and other forms of discrimination.
Commitment to Equality:
Sikhism teaches us that all human beings are equal and should be treated with respect and dignity. We are dedicated to dismantling systemic racism and discrimination, acknowledging the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization and inequality. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Justice and Fairness:
The Sikh principle of “Sarbat da Bhala” (welfare of all) guides us to work towards justice and fairness for all individuals, regardless of their background. We recognize that systemic racism creates power imbalances and unequal access to resources, and we strive to address these disparities through our actions and advocacy.
Community and Solidarity:
Sikhism emphasizes the importance of community and solidarity. We are committed to building strong, respectful partnerships with all communities, particularly those who have been marginalized and oppressed. By fostering understanding and support, we aim to create a more just and equitable society.
Respect for Diversity:
We value and celebrate the diverse backgrounds and experiences of all individuals. Cultural awareness and respect are integral to our interactions and policies. We promote anti-racism and cultural safety, ensuring that our community is free from discrimination, harassment, and vilification.
Active Participation and Advocacy:
Inspired by the concept of “Seva” (selfless service), we actively participate in efforts to challenge and eliminate racism in all its forms. We recognize the importance of lived experiences and the knowledge of those directly affected by systemic racism. Their insights guide our actions, programming decisions, and public communications.
Commitment to Transparency and Accountability:
We are dedicated to maintaining transparency in our efforts to combat racism. Our strategies, internal processes, and relationships with partners and supporters are informed by our commitment to anti-racism. We continuously evaluate our progress and strive for improvement to ensure that our actions align with our principles.
By adhering to these principles, we aim to create a community that embodies the teachings of Sikhism and promotes justice, equality, and inclusivity for all.
